Free Markets & Drug Wars
What is the relationship between what we call ‘free markets’ and drug wars, between the drug trade and globalization, between multinational corporations, banks, and drug cartels? When we look at the actual actors, institutions, and functions of the drug trade, the difference between a ‘legal’ and ‘illegal’ market are arbitrary. Just as in any other facet of globalized markets, the “discipline” of markets is enforced solely upon the poor and disadvantaged, not the corporations, nor the cartels.
The globalized system itself functions as if a large networked cartel, and the markets it encompasses are highly integrated, state protected, and regulated.
