The Reality Principle -Episode 30

“Land, Food and the Fight for Justice” with Raj Patel

RPLogoThis week, Eric sits down with world renowned author and activist Raj Patel to discuss a number of important issues affecting all of us. Raj provides his insights and analysis on the growing global conflict between powerful multinational corporations and small farmers. Raj explains how this fundamental conflict is part of the larger issue of the globalization of food production. However, Eric and Raj broaden the conversation to discuss the role of land and water grabbing, commodity speculation and big Agribusiness in shaping this conflict. During their discussion, they also pay specific attention to the issue of class and the way in which, at its root, this is an extension of class conflict. While corporations and George Soros and his fellow financiers continue to buy up land and dominate resources, there is a growing resistance movement. May we all be part of that resistance…

Raj Patel is the bestselling author of The Value of Nothing: How to Reshape Market Society and Redefine Democracy and Stuffed and Starved: Markets, Power, and the Hidden Battle for the World’s Food System. He is an activist and educator, currently serving as a visiting scholar at the Center for African Studies at the University of California Berkeley. Visit his website rajpatel.org.

  1. Eric this is an important topic. I recently spoke with two IT guys from Hyderbad glad to see a few Americans aware of the atrocities that Monsanto has practiced in India. Here are some links to research dangers of GMO’s: http://aaemonline.org/gmopost.html
put out by the American Accademy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) & http://www.naturalnews.com/026426_GMO_genetically_modified_food.html

  2. Hello, Simon. Although I can’t quite remember which BFP article your specific comment was attached to, I want to take a moment to share with you how intrigued I’ve been with your comment which intertwined Mongolian herders with the destiny of a young Sibel Edmonds. At first read, I honestly couldn’t decide whether I was experiencing genius or madness. And j mean that in the kindest way possible!

  3. Eric, thank you for sharing such an illuminating conversation. I have spread the seed as far and wide as possible. Thanks again!

  4. @iamb I don’t remember that comment either. I do have a fascination with Mongolian Tuva throat singing, particularly what I call split tone singing. See the National Geographic documentary ‘The Weeping Camel’. As for my non-linear thinking, it is based upon teaching secondary level science for many years. Take several unrelated subjects, pursue them in great depth;then through reflection and intuition, many creative discoveries are made. Here is a case in point, magnetite promotes two biomolecules in the body’s innate immune defense, Interleukin 2 & 10. In an entirely unrelated case, Amazon Deep Tissue salve generates healing by activating the body’s innate immune defense producing Interleukin 2 & 10. Following these separate research directions suggests a commonality, that nutrition provides the raw material for some sort of micro-antenna like magnetite to activate the body’s immune response and promote healing.
When it is presented like this, few would see the connection, but I do not want to take away from the valuable work this site does.
