The EyeOpener Report- Constitution-Free Border Zones

BFP VideoAs new revelations of NSA abuses continue to emerge on a daily basis, even the most politically oblivious Americans are now aware that the 4th Amendment has for all intents and purposes been consigned to the dustbin of history. This will be no surprise at all, however, for those who have been following the escalating chain of abuses that have been taking place in America’s border areas for decades now. Although these violations are becoming increasingly violent and increasingly flagrant, they are sadly only the latest examples of a phenomenon that has been occurring for upwards of half a century.

Find out more about violations and abuses that have been taking place in America’s border areas, and what you can do in this week’s EyeOpener Report with James Corbett.

  1. This is happening to Jews too. In 2007, I wanted to visit my friend Anna Singer in New Westminster, B.C. I had enough money for gas, but not much more. I refused to use a credit card, although I had that on my person. I was turned back at the border even though I had a valid passport. My friendship with Anna was over ten years old from our time in Tucson, Arizona when we worked together on Citizen diplomacy issues that helped break up the former Soviet Union. Now Anna is deceased and I never got to see her for a last time. This is a lady who lost all several times. Her father owned a factory in Poland. When it was confiscated, she fled to the Soviet Union. Her father disappeared into a gulag in Siberia. As a teenager, she fled to Israel and fought with Menachem Begin. Famous folks such Pierre Trudeau were her friends. Anna lost her son when he was 16 in an auto accident. I became like a surrogate son to her. Neither of us were in violation of the law, but I was not allowed to visit her in B.C. by the year 2007. This is wrong.

Good stuff, thanks James. I would say, in answer to Guillermo’s hypothetical question “what good is the Constitution” since it either enabled or failed to prevent the police state: it gives us something to throw back in their face. Something they can’t overtly dismiss. Ultimately it does still provide a legal basis on which to fight, which is important. Without it you’ve really got nothing.

I do also agree with you that it’s ultimately not that reliable a tool. If they amended the Constitution to, say, eliminate the First, Fourth, and Fourteenth Amendments (as opposed to simply ignoring them), it wouldn’t change too many of our minds on the subject of right and wrong. But then we’d have nothing left but the various forms of disobedience, up to and including revolution.

  3. Amy Goodman and Democracy Now.

Every time I see her I am reminded of the first time I heard Doug Valentine refer to her show as “Hypocrisy Now”

I don’t know if Valentine came up with that himself or borrowed it from someone else, but I sure got a good laugh from it.
