It may be a New Year, but age-old problems and issues still plague our Western societies. While there are many that gravitate to fire-and-brimstone negativity, rejoicing in the idea that a total planetary collapse is imminent and that they may get to observe it, what cannot be denied is the gradual and radical shift in consciousness that is happening all around us.

On a fundamental level, the same struggle has always existed: freedom vs. control.  In this 21^st century however, we find ourselves at an extremely important moment in human history. Aided by a revival (at least in terms of visibility) of political activism, the continued scholarly activity regarding the not-so-trustworthiness of the mainstream media, and the impact of the Internet, there are extraordinary opportunities to challenge systems of control in a way that previous generations could only dream of.  We must never lose sight of this – despite the constant wave of depressing headlines and disheartening developments we can clearly see at every level.

Look at the Occupy movement. For all the efforts on the part of the corporate-owned media to dismiss, demonize, and denigrate its message, it succeeded in drastically challenging many of the general public’s previously held assumptions about the capitalist system that they live under. As political scientist Michael Parenti and others have recognized, Occupy turned the tables on the establishment through its dissemination of a formula that was essentially propagandistic in nature (1% vs. 99%), that while overly simplistic, brought to the fore the rapidly rising inequality of the past three decades. This is a huge victory – imagery is powerful, and to borrow from Paulo Freire in his seminal text Pedagogy of the Oppressed, the struggle truly begins with men’s recognition that they have been destroyed. A few weeks ago, after this shenanigan-creating post, I came to a realization: For the last three years, considering the many-fronted assaults on our liberties and many-fronted perpetual wars, and of course, with way too many many-shaped propaganda channels within the mainstream and pseudo-alternative media, my posts have been all on negative and pessimistic notes (Let’s call it constant realism; shall we?). It’s just that with so many alarming and frightening, yet under-covered issues, I never get a chance to write on cases or issues that are actually positive and hope-inducing.

I have had numerous articles and commentaries on pseudo alternative websites posing as ‘independent.’ I have had tons of analyses on corporate-funded establishment lapdogs masquerading as civil liberties or whistleblowers NGOs. I have been bashing them relentlessly, and of course, deservedly. It may have come to a point where some of you may think I don’t approve of or respect any websites or news outlets out there! I don’t blame you- looking at my record.

So a couple of weeks ago I decided to write a post and list some of the websites, authors, analysts and activists I happen to follow closely and respect. Then came the issue of timing. Initially I was planning to post this commentary around the end of this month-December. But then, it just occurred to me. What if, God forbid, people think this is some sort of New Year’s Resolution?! Because I don’t do those thingies. It ain’t me. And it certainly is not about having the slightest regret or second thoughts about being ‘hot-headed and bashing’ when it comes to those deserved targets. Read more È

I simply don’t get it! Actually, I haven’t been ‘getting it’ for a while. Maybe you can help me get it; will you? Here is the quandary:
There are several major websites out there with quite a following. These websites advertise themselves as the ‘alternative.’ That is, the alternative to the mainstream media. They market themselves as ‘raw’ news and commentary sites. That is, the ‘real & raw’ news versus the processed, filtered, span bull sh.. sold to the public as ‘news.’ So, they say all that, right? Well, that was the straight forward and easy part. Here is where the quandary begins:

I have been visiting these ‘alternative & raw’ news and analyses sites for a year or two. I go to these sites and check out every single headline-title boldly displayed on their homepage. When I click and check out these titles-headlines-links I end up finding myself standing right in the middle of the mainstream media news outlets: New York Times, Washington Post, MSNBC, LA Times, ABC …And I go ‘ what the he..’. I check to see whether I made a mistake, took a wrong turn along the way, that is from the moment I entered these ‘alternative’ sites and clicked on their supposed ‘alternative’ headlines links, and frankly, I can’t see how I (or anyone) could have lost my way and ended up right in the bosom of the very mainstream media I’ve been trying to avoid. I then turn around, all disgusted, and quickly leave the very mainstream sites I have come to despise, thinking; heck I ended up adding one more hit to their traffic stats, and most likely contributed a penny or two to their corporate advertisers. In October 2009 I launched Boiling Frogs Post  with one purpose in mind: To establish a venue for investigative articles, editorials, analyses, discussions, and interviews on issues largely censored by the media. We are entering our second year, and we need your support to continue and expand this forum.

Boiling Frogs Post is solely dependent on its readers (That’s You), and has no ties to any institution, foundation, political party, organization or corporation. This is the only model I see fit to be called an independent news and views venue, untainted by external pressures, special interests or partisan flavoring.

The articles and analyses presented to you here are original and nonpartisan, not agenda scripts or special recipes to pump a particular propaganda, or to serve a particular interest. In the past year we have accomplished and delivered many of our objectives set prior to the launching of this site despite very limited resources.

Whether it is going after hypocrisy-ridden foreign policy practices, the ever revolving doors of foreign lobbies, or our stomped upon and continuously assaulted civil liberties, our  work transcends the webs put in place by partisanship and special interests and agendas.
