As we have demonstrated over the past several weeks on the EyeOpener, health freedom is a subject of growing importance for citizens of the United States and freedom lovers around the world as would-be “authorities” like the American Food and Drug Administration attempt to assert ever more control over our daily lives. Presuming to tell us what medications we must or must not take, what we can or cannot say about our experiences with natural medicines, and even what type of milk we may or may not consume, the system is quickly devolving into outright tyranny.

As with so many other types of tyranny, as the people awaken to this abrogation of their natural rights, they are learning that the system depends almost entirely on their complicity, and that their ability to simply put their foot down and say “no” to the would-be tyrants is a significant step toward reclaiming ownership of themselves and their bodies.

Ever since Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 cinematic classic “Dr. Strangelove” was released, it has become fashionable for those who have wished to avoid the debate over the fluoridation of the water supply to engage in the rhetorical equivalent of stuffing their fingers into their ears and singing “I can’t hear you” by alluding to General Ripper’s infamous “purity of essence” screed.

Beyond even the medical debate over the benefits of fluoride, or an examination of the history and sponsorship of this process, there is a deeper debate taking place. This debate is not over whether or not fluoride is safe or effective, but whether the government should be adding it to the water supply in the first place. And, as many argue, this practice amounts to forced medication of the population without their consent, and without regard to the case history or medical circumstances of any of the “patients” (i.e. the general public) who are exposed to this “medication.”

For centuries, the image of the family farmer has been as iconic a piece of Americana as baseball and apple pie. Rugged and independent, the farmer still represents in the minds of many those true ideals of American individualism that the country was based on, with Thomas Jefferson’s ideal of the “yeoman farmer” providing for him the ideal citizen for the fledgling American republic.

Even now, after the virtual extinction of the family farm model in the corporate agri-business paradigm, long after the American population shifted from predominately rural and agrarian to predominately urban and corporate, there is still the ideal of the farmer, dedicated to a life of hard, honest work, growing the food upon which we all rely.

What an indictment of modern America, then, that it sits by while a federal agency appoints itself over the remaining few organic family farmers, presuming to come between these farmers and their customers, telling people what they can and cannot eat, and even raiding farms that dare to resist with guns drawn.

Of the many constitutionally-guaranteed rights of the American public that the federal government has sought to destroy in recent decades, the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech is arguably the most important. If the ability for citizens to express themselves in the political, personal and commercial spheres is infringed, abridged, restricted or regulated by government agencies, this is one of the most obvious hallmarks of tyranny.

The Food and Drug Administration has appointed itself arbiter of what commercial speech is acceptable or unacceptable when it comes to marketing vitamins, supplements, foods, drugs, and other health products. Like every other form of government-imposed authority, however, that position of arbitration has been abused, corrupted, and, ultimately, used as an instrument to shut down competition from companies who threaten the business interests of the lobbyists and industry insiders that themselves populate the FDA.

Nothing could be more antithetical to the very idea of individual freedom than to have governments telling us that we must put some substance in our bodies. Without ownership of our body and the attendant right to refuse this or that medicine as we see fit, we are nothing more than slaves of the state. This is a principle that has been long understood. “Freedom” is a word that has been so abused in the modern era that it is difficult to remember that it is not just a campaign slogan or a nebulous item that causes Al Qaeda boogeymen to hate us. It is an ideal for which men have fought and died, an ideal that for the vast majority of human existence was almost literally unthinkable.

The principle of health freedom is really the underlying principle of freedom generally: that I own my body, and that no presumed governmental authority wearing whatever hat or badge can force me into ceding that ownership to them. Whether that be the freedom to drink raw milk or the freedom from being shot up with Big Pharma’s latest untested vaccine, it’s a freedom that touches each and every person on the planet’s life in the most personal way possible. And for that reason, the fight for health freedom is the key battleground in the war for individual liberty.
