Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton performing Jingo at the Crossroads Guitar Festival 2004 held at the Cotton Bowl stadium in Dallas, Texas.
Jin-go-lo-ba from the album Drums of Passion was originally released by Nigerian percussionist Babatunde Olatunji in 1960. It was covered by Santana on their first album, Santana in 1969. This performance of Jingo by Santana and Clapton is exceptional. So put on your earphones, crank up the decibels and listen to two of the very best…enjoy…DJPJ.

This week the Soothing the Beast BFP/Jamiol music pick moves into the land of the big bands with Sing, Sing Sing by Benny Goodman and His Orchestra. The song was written and first played in 1936 by Louis Prima. This performance by Benny Goodman was recorded on July 6, 1937. It is one of the most definitive songs of the big band and swing era and although written by Prima, it is most often associated with Goodman.
Gene Krupa on the drums is incredible as is Lionel Hampton on vibes. The rest of the band is Teddy Wilson on piano, Harry James; Ziggy Elman; Chris Griffin and Bunny Berigan on trumpets, Goodman on the clarinet, Red Ballard and Murray McEachern on trombones; Hymie Schertzer and George Koenig on alto saxophones; Art Rollini and Vido Musso on tenor saxophone; Allan Reuss on guitar and Harry Goodman on bass. I first heard this week’s Soothing the Beast BFP/Jamiol music pick artist about a month ago on a movie trailer/beer commercial. She was performing the song towards the end of the clip. Her voice and the song stuck a serious cord with me and I had to find out who she was. Her name is Gin Wigmore, a New Zealand singer-songwriter, and the song is Man Like That. Neil Young’s Let’s Impeach The President from his 2006 album Living with War is this week’s Soothing the Beast BFP/Jamiol music pic. Young’s Living with War album was defined it as “a musical critique of U.S. President George W. Bush and his conduct of the war in Iraq. In a Rolling Stone magazine interview, Young said of Let’s Impeach The President that this is “A political song about something that’s so wrong that the only way to point out how wrong it is is by doing a song that’s wrong – smashing and pounding away at it. A lot of people criticized it as a crappy song, that it was such a terrible melody.
